Michael McKeown is the founder and long standing resident of Hydroponic Music – one of the most respected collectives on the Northern Irish music scene. Spending most weekends playing records in nightclubs, McKeown is a versatile DJ who refuses to be pigeon holed - as likely to lash out electro bass and acid house bombs in one club, while firing an arsenal of Stax Soul and Jamaican rocksteady in the next. His adaptability behind the decks has led to has led to a diverse selection of local appearances in venues around Belfast such as The Empire, The Garrick, Thompsons, Crescent Arts Centre, Lavery’s, The Front Page, The Menagerie, Black Box, Bar Bacca, Attic Arts, | | | | | Catalyst Arts Centre, Auntie Annie’s, The Limelight and the Pavilion.
Support slots have come thick and fast alongside the likes of Adam Freeland, Richard Fearless (Death In Vegas), Asian Dub Foundation, Primal Scream, Howie B, Lo Fidelity Allstars, Afrika Bambaataa, Keith Tenniswood (2 Lone Swordsmen), Oasis DJs, David Holmes, DJ Hurricane (Beastie Boys), Dub Pistols, The Surgeon, Howard Marks, Blood & Fire Sound System, Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays), Alabama 3, and Adrian Sherwood to name a few. Further afield, he has appeared in renowned UK venues such as The Vaults (Edinburgh), Fortress (London), Temple Bar Music Centre (Dublin), Arts School (Glasgow) and The Nerve Centre (Derry). More recently, his services were requested to soundtrack the wrap party for Tom Hanks’ forthcoming Hollywood blockbuster ‘City of Ember’ when 400 specially invited cast and crew twisted the night away to a diverse set of rockabilly, punk, funk and soul.
