| | Hydroponic Music teamed up with Corona Extra to launch their new music partnership project on 31st May in The Lifeboat Bar, Belfast. ‘The Meat Market’ is a series of gritty club events taking place in various venues In and around the city, featuring high profile overseas artists alongside the cream of local and national talent. The unique nature of the launch party was underscored by the unorthodox choice of venue. The Lifeboat Bar, situated in Queen’s Square, Belfast, has been making waves in recent months as a venue that focuses on underground music, regardless of genre – from Italian House to 50’s Rockabilly, the venue has been attracting weekend purveyors of quality music on a consistent basis. The first ‘Meat Market’ event was a unique experience for Belfast music fans, with a capacity crowd witnessing a global headline act within the confines of an intimate bar environment. | | | | Adding their own twist to the layout of the venue, the promoters took the bold move of trebling the capacity by utilising the area outside the bar, enabling 300 lucky punters to soak up the atmosphere. Barbeque facilities were also available and an outdoor Sound System was installed, adding a unique summertime twist to the proceedings. The Lifeboat’s resident DJs Jonathan Carberry & Mark Gilliland performed warm up sets, before Hydroponic Music DJ Michael | | | | | McKeown took to the decks for an alternative set of rockabilly, soul and electronic cuts. The headline act – exclusively flown in from New York City – was Death in Vegas main man Richard Fearless. Richard is a heavyweight on the global music scene, having collaborated with the likes of Primal Scream, Iggy Pop, Liam Gallagher, Dot Allison, Paul Weller and The Jesus & Mary Chain under his ‘Death in Vegas’ moniker. He is currently on the cusp of launching his new band ‘Black Acid’ a New York based gutter garage act who sound akin to The Velvet Underground being sucked through a subway sewage system and spat directly into The Stooges living room. | | | | | A typical Fearless DJ set commonly centres on Detroit techno, but on this occasion he delivered a genre busting mix of hip hop, dub, electronica and rock n roll, even treating the crowd to the first ever airing of his exclusive remix of the forthcoming Oasis single. The Meat Market is set to run for the duration of 2008, with each individual event throwing down a tailored music policy from underground dance, rock n roll and funk. | | | | Details on the venue location and the next event are coming soon. | | |
